Ingredients

  • •3 large jalapeño peppers
  • •1 cup mayonnaise
  • •1/2 cup sour cream
  • •1/4 cup buttermilk
  • •1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • •2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
  • •2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  • •1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • •1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • •1 teaspoon onion powder
  • •1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (plus more to taste)
  • •1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven broiler to high and line a small baking sheet with foil.

  2. 2

Place the jalapeños on the prepared sheet and broil for 7-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skins are blistered and charred.

  3. 3

Transfer the roasted jalapeños to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let them steam for 5 minutes to loosen the skins.

  4. 4

Once cool enough to handle, peel off the charred skins, remove stems and seeds for less heat (leave some seeds for more spice), and roughly chop the peppers.

  5. 5

In a blender or food processor, combine the roasted jalapeños, mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, cilantro, chives, dill, lime juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  6. 6

Blend until the dip is completely smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  7. 7

Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.

  8. 8

Serve chilled with chips, veggies, or as a sauce for tacos, burgers, or grilled meats.

Tips & Variations

Pro Tips

  • • For a milder dip, remove all seeds and membranes from the jalapeños before blending.
  • • Letting the dip chill for at least 30 minutes enhances its flavor and creaminess.
  • • Use fresh herbs for the brightest flavor, but dried can be substituted in a pinch (use 1/3 the amount).
  • • Add more buttermilk for a pourable ranch dressing consistency.
  • • Roast extra jalapeños and freeze them for quick dip-making later.

Storage

  • • Refrigerator: Up to 1-2 weeks in airtight container
  • • Freezer: Up to 3 months (thaw overnight in fridge)
  • • Best Practice: Store in glass jars for longer freshness

Recipe Variations

  • • Swap cilantro for parsley if you’re not a fan of cilantro.
  • • Add 1/2 an avocado for a jalapeño-avocado ranch dip.
  • • Blend in 1/4 cup crumbled feta or cotija cheese for a tangy, cheesy twist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! Prepare up to 3 days in advance and store in the fridge. The flavor gets even better as it sits.

How spicy is this dip?

With seeds removed, it’s mild-moderate. Leave some seeds in for extra heat, or use fewer jalapeños for less spice.

Can I freeze this dip?

Freezing is not recommended as the texture may separate. For storage tips, check our guide: How to Freeze Sauces for Maximum Freshness.

What if my dip gets too thick?

Simply whisk in a little extra buttermilk until your desired consistency is reached. See more fixes in Why Your Sauce Gets Too Thick as It Cools.
